The
WV Apprenticeship for Child Development Specialist is a training
program for people who are employed in early care and education
programs. Persons must complete 3,200 to 4,000 hours of on-the-job
training and 300 hours of course work and related assignments
in order to receive certification. Apprentices are assigned approximately
2 hours of related laboratory work each week.
Apprentices attend four semesters of course work. A semester consists
of 15 weeks, with one three-hour class each week. Typically, course
work is offered during fall and spring semesters.
Apprentices are assigned related laboratory work each week. These
assignments may include keeping a journal, reading articles, planning
activities for their classrooms, performing observations and working
on group projects.
Apprentices earn a salary and may receive incremental wage increases
while in the program. Employers who sponsor apprentices benefit
from employing well-trained providers who are able to provide
a safe, nurturing, learning environment for young children.
